Welcome to combat university, today I’m going to teach you the 5 steps of throwing a dominating self-defense punch.
A punch is merely striking or hitting somebody with your fist. Pretty easy and I think it’s one of the most natural things that we do in self-defense so let’s get to it.
STEP 1
Step number 1 is just getting in a self-defense stance, to get in a self-defense stance you need to put your non-dominant leg forward, your non-dominant arm forward, put your hands up to protect your face, elbows should be tucked in slightly and you need to angle your body slightly toward your opponent.
From this position we could throw a jab by just throwing our fist out hitting our opponent and coming bringing it back quickly, or we could also throw a cross from here.
You generate power starting at your feet and moving it up through your body. Turn your hips and use that leverage to help generate that power into our opponent as you strike.
Now, if you want to learn how to throw a jab or a cross there’s a lot of amazing videos out there teaching you how to punch like a boxer but this for this article, I’m here to teach you how to throw a self-defense punch.
STEP 2
For step 2 you’re going to make a fist.
When you’re making a fist, you will need to tuck your fingers into the palm of your hand and then put your thumb over them.
Make sure your thumb goes over our index and our middle finger. If you were to tuck our thumb first and put our fingers over it, you could break it when you strike something.
The same thing could happen if you were to keep your thumb out and not tuck it at all.
You could easily catch it on something and break or hurt it, so you want to tuck your fingers first and then your thumb. Once you do this then you are ready to strike.
STEP 3
Step 3 for this one is that you’re going to step into our opponent.
That’s right, you’re going to step with your dominant leg and you’re going to throw your power arm into your opponent.
So, step 3 is just stepping towards your opponent to close the gap ad created momentum/power.
STEP 4
For step 4 you are going to strike your opponent.
When you strike with this punch you want to strike with the top two knuckles of your hand.
You don’t want to strike with the smaller knuckles because they are weaker and you can easily dislocate, break or hurt something.
Also, you want to step and strike at the same time so 3 and 4 go together.
STEP 5
Step 5 is to breathe.
When you listen to boxers fight or tennis players hit the ball you can usually hear them making noises as they hit. They’re breathing when they hit because it generates more power causing them to hit harder.
So, when you’re striking your opponent, you first want to get in a good stance, then you want to make a fist as you step into your opponent. As you’re stepping you are going to reach out and strike them as you break out.
That’s all there is to throwing a dominating self-defense punch.
