How to Throw a Palm Strike

Welcome to Combat University today I’m going to describe how to do a palm strike.

Palm Strike

Make sure when you’re hitting with the palm that you strike with the bottom of your hand.   The meaty part next to the wrist, that’s where you want to hit with.

When you strike somebody with your fist there’s a lot of opportunities to hurt yourself, there are a lot of bones in the hand that you can hurt, break, or dislocate.

That’s why the palm strike is one of the best strikes to use in self-defense because it helps make sure that you don’t hurt yourself during a fight or when striking. That’s why when hitting with the palm, we want to strike the harder parts of the body like the face, solar plexus, ribs, kidneys, nose, etc.

When doing this strike, you can do so with your fingers open or with your fingers curled. Keeping the fingers open gives you the opportunity to get your fingers in the eyes of your opponent.   The decision is up to you since either way will work.

You also need to make sure that your thumb is tucked in.  If you don’t tuck the thumb in there are a lot of opportunities for it to catch on something and end up hurting yourself which can take you out of the fight. You want to tuck the thumb next to your index finger.

To throw this strike you want to first get in a defensive stance, then you’ll put your hands up with your hands open, tuck your thumbs in while facing your palms somewhat facing your opponent.

From this position you’re going to have one arm in front which will be your non dominant hand and your dominant hand more in the rear.  You can strike with either one.  If you hit with your front hand, then it will be the same as throwing a jab and if your throw with your rear hand then it will be similar to throwing a cross.

When throwing with the rear hand, it’s just like throwing a punch, the power starts at the feet and powers up as you twist with your core finishing as you strike with your palm through your opponent.

This is not a slap, this is a strike.  A palm strike has the potential to be stronger than a punch if you do it right.

The other thing to keep in mind when you’re striking with a palm as that you want to keep your wrist in a natural position. So, if you’re going to strike straight out in front of you, you wouldn’t keep your fingers straight up and down because that’s an uncomfortable and unnatural feeling and you are likely to hurt your wrist.  The more natural position would be to turn your fingers slightly outward. If you were to strike someone to the ribs, then your fingers would be pointed more to the side.  If you were to strike down like into someone’s groin, then your fingers would be pointed down.

Again, you want your hand to be in the most comfortable position when striking.  You can practice on a heavy bag to find the most comfortable position.

This is a pretty straightforward technique to do.  Remember to hit with the lower part of your palm.  Remember that it can replace any punching strike you can throw like the jab, cross, or even a hook.  Also, remember to keep your wrist in the most comfortable and natural position.
