How to do a Push Kick

Hey guys, welcome to combat university today I’m going to teach you how to do a push kick.

The push kick is one of the most dominating kicks you can use, and you see it a lot in Muay-Thai. It’s also a great technique to use when trying to keep your opponent at a distance.

So, the first thing we’re going to do is get in our defensive stance… hands up protecting your face, elbows in, body slightly turned towards your opponent. From here we’re just going to bring our leg up and push out with it.

All right, the great thing about this kick is you can pinpoint where you want to hit when using it.

For example, if you wanted to hit the solar plexus or you want to kick the face (which I don’t recommend) you could do so without much effort.

If you want to keep your opponent at a distance you will need to keep kicking any time that they get withing range.  If they get too close then you won’t be able to use it.

The push kick is basically done by bringing your knee up to about chest level and then you’re going to angle your foot up and push your leg out with force at your opponent.

This can be done with either the left or right side and that’s all there is to it.

A good practice drill for this exercise is to kick a wall.  Knee comes up and kick the wall with the bottom of your foot.  Practice both left and right and get a good feel of how this kick is supposed to go. You’ll get used to that motion of up and out. That’s how we perform a push kick.

Remember to get in your stance then, leg comes up (either side), make sure that the knee goes up to chest level, foot has toes pointed up and then just push out with force.
